what happened?

had a customer send me a photo of the main sign with their tenant panel. theirs is the Doctor Newman panel. what happened to this? from what I can see there's a photo/logo printed along with copy and it all looks like it is running. what would make this happen? I don't know who made this panel or the sign or if the same people made them all as it is the only one that looks like this on the sign that has failed.

That would be my guess too. An aqueous print using dye based inks.

I have seen some really bad quality laminates appear to sort of brown and burn after a while.

Aqueous dye ink (instead of pigmented ink) and probably without laminate as well is another distinct possibility.

Looks like someone put some sort of clear panel overlay on it, expecting to make something low end into something exterior durable and it failed....... miserably.

There was a guy locally around here, that had an indoor painting/printing machine for baby shower, weddings and other quickie banners, but to make them for exterior use... would simply wrap them in Saran Wrap and call them Outside Durable. He went out of business about 2 years coming onto the scene. Yep, he was one of the very first franchise sign guys I ever heard of, back in the 80's. I think it was called 'Instant Signs & Banners' or something like that. I guess he opened back up, around your neck of the woods, now......... ​

My take on this is someone used an aqueous printer using dye based inks and printed on 8-1/2" x 11" office paper and glued it on the sign, it has NO covering or laminate at all, and moisture has caused the aqueous inks to run like that. The arrows show the edge of the paper applied to the sign, you just cant see the other over laps. :ROFLMAO:

thanks for all the info. I too saw that line that makes it look like it has something stuck on the face in two parts. I've never seen work this bad but bet they went with the person as they were the right price

Someone said it looked like it was done on 8.5X11 sheets, maybe it was done on a thermal printer???? I know thermal prints just keep getting darker and darker....

That's what it looked like to me. Like your Wal-Mart receipt if it gets too hot, just turns all black.
