Calder is actually the company name... although pretty much everyone calls the RIP "Caldera".
Their rep product comes in a couple of different flavors... mostly differentiated by the sizes of the machines that it drives. VisualRIP+ is their large and wide format solution. GrandRIP is their...
VisualRIP+ is the way to go....maybe.
If you're in RI, then I'm in your backyard (out of Dighton, MA).
PM me and I'll get you a 15 day full key for you to check it out. I'm a Independent Certified Trainer for Caldera.
If you intend on running equipment besides Roland, then I would consider...
Replace the cut carriage cable & guides
W is the pinch wheel sensor
It will show you a * under the W when the pinch wheel sensor (on the back of the cutting carriage) senses a pinch wheel.
You need to replace the cut carriage cable and guides. In the repair process, I would completely clean...
Looks like Caldera...
That's most certainly a version of Caldera. They didn't seem to change much except for the color of the interface and a few icons.
This is a smart move by Roland. Caldera is awesome. VersaWorks is so hacked up that it will never be able to integrate the Adobe APPE.
Then...
Try Caldera
Hello Gene,
I am not a merchant member here, so I didn't want to post this in the forum. I'm a wide-format color shop owner here in Massachusetts, but I am a former Roland Field Tech, and current Caldera Certified Consultant. When I am not in my shop I travel across the country...
Ink Choke and Ink Systems
The OP is having trouble with a Roland VS series printer. The Ink Choke is only found in machines that are VS or newer.
I cannot cover the exact process of damper replacement in a VS unit in this forum, but I think that it will help if I offer some background on ink...
O-Ring/Gasket
You have a damper issue.
If you look carefully at the nipple with the arrow, you will see that the o-ring/gasket from the damper. It was pulled out of the damper. You are simply not getting a good seal.
Look at the bottom of your damper and you will see (most likely) that the...
Stop!!!!
Your ORIGINAL mainboard is probably fine... you probably just needed to complete the limit initialize. The ??? happens on all Roland machines when it does not have a valid limit initialize.
You stated in the thread that you had trouble during the limit initialize in that the carriages...
Silly question...
This will sound silly, but have you checked the cable running from the panel to the mainboard? Reseat it?
I remember this from the break/fix test at Roland school...
Also possibly a stuck key keeping the panel from working properly? This happens quite often on the XC-540...

Time and Date
The only purpose of the on-board battery is to keep the clock going.
A sure sign of a dead battery is when you see "PRESS POWER AGAIN TO CLEAN" when you turn on the printer.
Essentially, the printer doesn't know when it was last cleaned, and thus it will initiate a normal...
Demo Key
Easy breezy on a Mac Mini.
Please contact me tomorrow and I will get you a 15 day fully-functioning demo key for v10.

Cut Carriage Cable
Stop messing with the encoder strip... it has nothing to with looking for pinch wheels.
You have a micro break in your cut carriage cable. This is a common issue.
The cut carriage cable carries three signals from the cut carriage to the mainboard...

Moving printer
Always remove the ink. It's not worth cleaning up the mess, or the potential damage to the machine.
You have less than $20 worth of ink inside the inkline on a 30" unit.
Plus it not always an ink spill that you are trying to prevent. I've visited more than one printer that was...
Saving White Ink
It's the "until you need it" part that concerns me.
Loading an inkline on the VS-series is not as straightforward as it used to be in the good 'ol DX4 days.
Ink recirculation system and pressurized ink delivery makes it a little more tricky to mess with individual ink lines...
VSi Upgrade
There will be lots of folks here that will say run it into the ground... but I'd buy into the future. It's only going to be a continuing struggle as the machine gets older.
If you are a Roland guy, I'd move to a nice new VS-540i with a seven color inkset (CMYKLcLmLk) with its 7...
No longer supported...
One thing to keep in mind that the SJ-745EX entered end-of-support status at Roland as of January 2014.
This means that they not only unable to provide tech support for this model, but are also unable to guarantee parts availability. A great example is the unit that...
