painting takes time, but you get a more vintage look which i think goes well with what you are doing. Screening one sign would be just as time consuming. I would assume you don't have a printer, so why not just do cut vinyl if paint is taking too much time. paint the substrate red then do black...
should be a setting in there i think it was called overprint if its the hp touch screen flatbed. i dont remember the model number they had it at shop i worked for back in 08-11
I have printed on a provided stained cedar blank on a HP Flatbed back in about 09. We ran test print first to have the customer sign off on it. It turned out great, customer loved it. I don't remember what it said or why they wanted it but customer get what customer wants.

i would say its the loading of the material. gotta make sure your roll is tight and even on the edges. You may have to re-roll sometimes, or you can wiggle it straight if its off a little. both Vinyl and lam. I also only like to use one piece of tape in the center of the roll where it starts on...
