I've heard that scotch tape works well, but I've yet to try it myself. I usually just turn off the lights on the side of the room where our Graphtec is. It works for me, and I assume it's because there's less light reflection to disrupt the sensor.
I always found that the best way to tighten material on the rollers is to open your rollers all the way, pull your laminate between the rollers all the way through, and tack it to the back of the laminator. Once you lower your top roller, it should have enough pressure pulling on the material...

That's pretty much what I'm doing at this point - Eyeballing about an 1/8". It works for the time being, but being as how time is money, it would be nice to make the procedure a little more efficient.
