  1. big job I just finished

Just finished two of these heaters at an asphalt refinery down in Savannah, Ga. Total size of the lettering was 22' x 8'. All painted from a lift, no vinyl used. Used pounced patterns and latex paint. Felt good to do this, very satisfying. Not counting the layout, actual painting time was...
  2. If this was happening to any other software.................

Just a thought before you put all your eggs in Adobe's cloud basket. I swear, if this was any other software we would stop using it immediately. Plus, on top of that, paying a monthly fee to where you never truly own the software. I think I'll just stick to my program cd's and manage my own...
  3. Admit it, you know you've used it!!!!

World's most hated font, you know you've used it....... http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/08/29/vincent-connare_n_3837441.html
  4. Tire Company Repaint

It's a shame that everything has to be about dollars. For those that can't do painting by hand they can't appreciate the feeling of finishing a job and looking back and thinking "I did that" and be proud of it. Even better is when the owner or someone else walks by and says "I wish I could do...
  5. YESCO employee falls 100' off MGM sign...

Wasn't YESCO the company that made one of the biggest signs in the world in Vegas back in the '90s I think? I believe it was for the Hilton. Signs of the Times had a cover story about it and about a year later a good wind buckled it. There are some guys in my area that love the big stuff, but...
  6. vinyl not sticking to painted wall, help!

Just repaint the wall with oil based Kilz or any good alkyd enamel, even scraps you have around the shop mixed together. A gallon of Kilz will run $20.00 - 30.00, a couple of hours at the most labor to paint and you'll be good to go.
  7. Help on sign post

google / images / decorative sign post / go to the website / order Can't be any easier than that.
  8. how did 18" z 24" become a standard sign size?

Question says it all. Why isn't 16" x 24" a standard sign blank size? And for that matter a 24" x 32"? If you're selling a batch of signs there would be no waste at all out of a 4 x 8 with the smaller sizes and basically the customer wouldn't know the difference unless you told them. Just one...
  9. pan face removal

Sounds like you may have to remove from the top. There has to be some screws somewhere. It will be more aggravating, but 3' x 7' won't be too bad. Or it may be a hinge type, that's aggravating too. Once I had 2 8' x 12' faces my installer had to remove and reinstall from the top about 20'...
  10. New to Sign Industry - Need Advice

Unfortunately, you don't need to know the sign business to be in the sign business. The franchises know this. Does the Subway owner make the sandwiches? No, he or she hires good managers and good employees and many own several locations. All they are concerned with is the bottom line and can...
  11. We need to paint a Pylon sign, big one, what do we use to paint the frame and posts?

Anything is paintable. It's probably a baked enamel finish, just clean really well, let dry and paint with alkyd enamel, possibly two coats if it's a color change. Rollers and brushes, you don't say what the height is. A friend of mine used to paint the poles on the big billboard structures...
  12. Cold-calling and gaining new clients.

I've been in this business almost 25 years and started from scratch cold calling. This of course was before the internet and emails, etc. I would have a goal to make a certain amount of calls each week. I would target businesses that needed a sign repainted (this was before vinyl). You'd be...
  13. what do you think of this??

How do you feel about never owning your software? Even with updates I may have second thoughts. Between this and reading about a 3d printer making a plastic gun that can really shoot, I think I'll go lay down and take a nap...
  14. Tuff customer

I think the first mistake was refunding any money. I have on my work orders that deposits are nonrefundable. I got burned ONCE by a customer kind of like you described, had cut the board to shape and spent time on the design and said never again would I let that happen to me. So in your case...
  15. Source for floor graphics?

Can anyone lead me in the right direction on a source for digitally printed floor graphics? Won't have to last more that 4 or 5 months. Thanks in advance.
  16. Airport sign falls down-kills boy

I did some work for a guy who built multi story condos in Florida. Anytime he and his wife are on vacation he tells his wife as she leans against the railing on the balcony, "Be careful about that railing, it was built by the low bidder!" I thought about that yesterday.
  17. problem with cutting master since loading flexisign

I'm helping a local sign guy who has hired me to do some designing for him to ease his work load. He has CorelDraw x6 and is cutting to a Graphtec plotter thru a usb cable using a Cutting master 2 plug in. He has installed flexi 8 for me on this same computer since this is what I'm used to...
  18. New 4x8 sign

Go to Lowe's or Home Depot. Get a couple of 4' x 8' sheets of smooth white tile board, should run you around $20.00 each , a quart of black exterior alkyd enamel, a couple of foam roller covers and give the boards two coats of black or wrap the face in cheap black vinyl. Tile board will...
  19. Aluminum sign ?

I worked with my dad 15 years painting from '75 - ' 89. In the late 70s and into the 80s galvanized aluminum gutters were the rage and a lot were being installed. We would wash the gutters down with vinegar, let dry, and then put a latex primer over them, usually two coats followed with a top...
  20. Repainting the Hollywood sign

Time lapse video of repainting the letters on the Hollywood sign. Never realized how big those letters were. http://framework.latimes.com/2012/12/06/behind-the-lens-time-lapse-shoot-of-the-hollywood-sign-repainting/
