  1. Sign Craft Trade Secret #77 No more lost design fees

Just find customers like Dan Antonelli who will pay you for 80 hours labor to vectorize a kids face, not counting the other design time..(Article in latest Sign Craft magazine). Great work if you can get it I guess. After looking at that art for 80 hours I would have to go outside so I didn't...
  2. Recent stuff

I NEVER hang panels like that. A thunderstorm can have winds of 75 miles an hour and those things just swinging and banging away............ Also it kind of irks me not to add am or pm to panels with hours, even office door lettering. I know the shindig is on a Sunday ( I guess it is) and...
  3. Request from a municipality to remove TM or ® from a sign?

I see you're in Bluffton, SC, so I'm assuming you're describing Hilton Head. They made Red Roof Inn Motel paint their roof green about 15 years ago. They have bragged on having some of the harshest sign codes in the country and proud of it. Parking a lettered vehicle in a parking lot, such as...
  4. Disassociate substituted font?

I've never found a way to undo that. It's happened to me and it's a bummer. I have a habit now of saving another copy after converting to outlines, you can't edit it but it may save your rear end.
  5. how can i make this bigger and not look like crap?

I admire your bravery, not only to do the job but to post the pics. Looks like I need to rethink (1) dealing with customers who know more about signs than me and (2) everything I've tried to learned about design in 26 years. I guess I can cancel my subscription to SignCraft now.
  6. how can i make this bigger and not look like crap?

But I thought all these articles in SignCraft that Dan Antonelli writes says you have to have scruples. If the customer doesn't want to do it your way, you WALK AWAY! Of course that sounds nice in theory but you gotta eat right? (Cant help but think of changing his business name to...
  7. how can i make this bigger and not look like crap?

No offense but if that's the actual lettering on the truck already, that's pretty bad. I don't know why you are even worrying about going bigger. Just say "In my professional opinion that's not going to work" and leave it at that. Never have i seen lettering that big on a set of doors...
  8. Vinyl on concrete walls

Latest Signs of the Times had a new product listing from Oracal for vinyl for painted block and brick, etc. Had a closeup of the print on block, adhered tight in the picture. Don't know the name or the number but looks promising.
  9. Want opinions on banner design

You know what's scary about all this? There are a few members who actually believe this an actual job design. What started as a joke on a Friday afternoon is now an actual critique of a make believe job. Are there really some members here who believed this was an actual job in the works...
  10. Want opinions on banner design

Looks great, but I think I would use some brighter colors and maybe Old English all caps. Unfortunately I've seen some stuff that is just about equal to this, and I guess somebody got paid for it.
  11. Not really sign related

Bite the bullet and buy some samples. I would hate to buy paint at $25 - $35 gallon based on a computer monitor. If it's going to be a solid color stain it will work just like paint and darken as it dries. Then you'll be able to see the samples in different light and times of day.
  12. Emailing Future Customers

I would make sure that the words "Nigerian", "money" and "transferred" show up in the header. :)
  13. Sign I just did!

The baseline quote was actually said to me back in the '90s when I was lettering a billboard. I had tape on the straight letters and had pulled off the tape to do an "O" and and "S" rounded top and bottom. Customer couldn't figure out what I was doing and acted like I was an idiot...
  14. Sign I just did!

No offense to you or implied. I realize this was probably a "logo" you reproduced faithfully, but if this was done B.C. (before computers) no customer that I ever had would pay for that. When signs were hand painted everyone demanded perfection and wouldn't settle for less. "Why does the o...
  15. Best method?

Here's the way I do it, for me it's easier and less stressful. I clamp the halfway point (on a 4x8 for example) to my table with print side up EXACTLY where it is to go on the substrate. Fold back and trim the backing paper on 1/2 the sign, flood substrate and vinyl with soapy water...
  16. SignCraft magazine is letting me down

Ha, I hadn't even thought about that!!
  17. SignCraft magazine is letting me down

Got my Jan / Feb issue of SignCraft yesterday. Of course all work came to a halt as I looked at it. It gets me that the first half of the issue, really any issue of the magazine deals with sign guys (Behounek / Antonelli, etc) that write great articles about color, layout, readability, not...
  18. flexi 8 and roland gx-24 on usb port

Didn't think about the driver part. I'll try downloading that in the morning and yes, the gx-24 is listed in the plotter setup. Thanks for the advice.
  19. flexi 8 and roland gx-24 on usb port

Helping a friend of mine who is trying to get flexi 8.1 to work with a roland gx-24 cutter. In flexi's setup menu for the plotter the usb port is not listed as an option, it lists com 1 -4 and some lpt ports along with some other options, but nothing about a usb port. Any ideas or solutions...
  20. big job I just finished

Thanks for all the kind words. Yes it was satisfying, the guy that was running the man lift asked me how many guys in this part of the country could do this type of work. I told him maybe enough to count on one hand. I told him you just take a big job and break it down into small sections...
