  1. Those blasted 18x24 Cor-x signs!

I hope I dont pizz a bunch of folks off but these so called signs are the scourge of the sign business. Anyone that buys 50 or a hundred of these things are adding visual pollution and creating a bad image for ligit sign companys. They litter the public right of way and are not legal. But if...
  2. Spoil Board ?? Switch from LDF to PVC

I was at a customers shop yesterday and they have a Gerber with a PVC top with Vacuum hold down. We have had our Multicam 80x120 for years and had always used LDF and it works fine. I am wondering if I made a PVC top and machined the hole and sockets how well it would work in comparison.
  3. If you were starting over, what would you do/buy?

The best way to make a million bucks in the sign industry is to start with 2 million.
  4. People who are jealous of you

Some may look at buying things on cash as not having the ability to obtain credit. Unless you just bought the new Maybach with custom made luggage I am not impressed. Your banker will not likely be impressed either.
  5. wind load calculation

Most engineers will do a quick calc and charge you 100-150 bucks. Have you heard the term you cant fight city hall. Redo the drawing yourself or have it done by eng if required. The customer should have to pony up for the extra time to permit and eng. drawings if needed. As for digging a...
  6. New sign guy in my area

The term expert, master, and other descriptions of ones self are generally always showing the lack of whatever they are to be the best in. When I think of the "masters" I think of Da Vinci, Rembrandt, Dali, the guy that cut his ear off and the like. Looking at the guys website it looks like...
  7. my cut order is out by .25"!!!!

Better than a 1/4'' to short
  8. Dealing with Crazy + Angry Customers

I was handling a big job when I worked for another shop I think it was over a 100k . This guy was a PITA from day one. He was very demanding and pushy. I heard him go off on a tantrum to one of his employees when I was sorting out some details. He called the shop and was being a pain and I...
  9. Okay, tell me why this installation won't work.

How windy is it where these are going ? Flat sign on round post seems like it will wiggle back and forth till it tears the screws thru the face. Even with fender washers. I would get 2 u channel post and use a driver to install them and bolt the sign to that. I hate digging post holes...
  10. Jewelite on Lexan

We have customer ask for Lexan all the time. Generally I ask why the are wanting polycarb if its not needed because of size. In this case since you are using trim cap I assume that the letters are smaller. Unless it was a vandal issue tell him you can save some money and not have to redo them...
  11. I am so sick of customers

I also think you wasted more time on the rant than with the mower.
  12. I am so sick of customers

I once heard from a old sign guy that "the sign business would be great if it wasn't for the customers and employees"
  13. Seems we have another crazy customer

Unless its a extreme circumstance if a customer give me a bad check and does not make good right away they are on 1/2 down and CASH on delivery. If I sell anything and get a deposit I want to get it done as fast as we can and get the balance.
  14. a sign to match these existing signs

You can re- use the old face. Bring back to shop and sand face down to bare f-glass. Spray trans white Frisket the letters and spray new backround color. Peal frisket and satin clear. That is the way those are made (maybe w/o clear coat) That the way we did the 10' bottle caps...
  15. Help- How to Light this sign?

I dont think any of the sign supply LED's would work. It would look spotty and only light less than a foot. Go to a lighting supply co that does parking lot and building lighting. They should be able to get the right fixture that is designed for that. If you normally do not do electric signs...
  16. Customer Doesn't Want To Pay Sales Tax

One thing is for sure the state will not complain or likely return if you collect to much tax. On another note they just raised our collection rate 7.825 to 7.925 percent to our sales tax to help with a short fall in our metro mass transit. That was a month ago. No with state budget cuts...
  17. Customer Doesn't Want To Pay Sales Tax

At 35 emails it should be more like 25 thousand.
  18. Customer Doesn't Want To Pay Sales Tax

Service and labor are not taxable for stuff like installs or repair work but if its a sign you pay sales tax for the whole thing just like a car or anything else. Also if its a ongoing customer you must have a updated or current form as well.
  19. Customer Doesn't Want To Pay Sales Tax

Make sure if someone says they are tax exempt you get the proper form for your state filled out. My wifes company had a audit done a number of years ago and they did not have all the forms. Since they did not have the forms they were on the hook. No big deal only about 1.2 million. One of...
  20. Net Profit Estimate

First off good look in the sign Biz. I bet if you asked 10 different shops and the gave you a honest answer you would get 10 answers. One thing I know for sure is when I have worked at the country club I did not see a bunch of pick up trucks owned by sign shops. I dont know what the avg is...
