open new illustrator doc. place pdf. while still selected go under: object / flatten transparency. select convert fonts to outlines and move the slider all the way to the vector side. vector doctor posted that. the trick worked for me several times.

hi gvp - while in newer versions you can select from swatches of pantones you still get RGB or CMYK builds of pantones. I would think you could fill a layer with 100% of that build then lower the layer opacity. It's not as clear cut as working with a spot color in say illustrator. If...

i was able to duplicate your problem by going to the pull down window from inside the layers tab and selecting 'paste remembers layers'. after going in and de-selecting that option paste went back to normal. this was AiCS1 - but should be similar in all. good luck

make sure you're on the actual pen tool. if you're on the pen+ or pen- tool the options disappear. if you're not seeing the other pens - click (and hold down) on the pen tool in the toolbar and other pen tools will spring open for selection.
