FYI - emailed SAi and hope to start dialogue with them about this very issue. Will update as I can. Maybe Steph can shed some light on this too.

I received a very quick reply from SAi with the following information...

"This patch is for Flexi v10/PPS v10, build number 1577. It fixes defects of PDF export for softshadow and lens, as well as improving speed.

To apply the patch, unzip and copy the files in the subfolders to the corresponding folders of Flexi/PPS installation folder (such as C:\Program Files\SAi\SAi Production Suite\Plugins & /Program), replacing the existing files."

PM with email for patch file.

Screw Flexi... It will never compare to AI (which costs much less) and is far more capable of just about everything.

Still need a good RIP with AI if you are in the wide format or vinyl cutting biz.
Not to say that it has to be Flexi but you do need something more than just Illy.

+1 to what Wayne says. Also on vector and outline text, I'd argue that all vector programs do essentially the same thing (nodes, curves and placing text). So it comes down to which one you use and thus can use more easily. But true sign software like Flexi creates with vinyl in mind. Overlapping, intersecting lines that need to be made vinyl-ready in AI or CorelDRAW are vinyl-ready from the get-go in Flexi, SignLab, etc.

Brandon - I installed the files right after I sent the patch to you and worked well for me. Give me a call Friday and I will help.

As a committed Corel user since Version 3 I have to say I just don't understand what your point is? Where exactly does Corel automatically produce overlapping, intersecting lines which need to be altered?

The last version of Cadlink I owned was way back when it was a DoS based program. To produce any sort of decent artwork Corel was the only option.. Cadlink didn't have any drawing tools cos it's was a very basic DoS program. This creates an interesting juxtaposition.... "true" sign making software is now the "only proper way to go"... yet in the early days of computer cut vinyl it simply wouldn't have been possible to produce intricate designs without Corel.

I've watched "true" sign making software evolve... of perhaps that should be play catch up? Corel brings out new tools and features which are then copied badly and bolted into "true" sign software... and sold onto unsuspecting sign makers at a vastly inflated price.

Look at the software related to by this post. Soft shadowing is basically the bevel feature which Corel introduced in X4... the only real difference is that the Corel tool actually works.

Export to PDF.... Corel built a "publish to PDF" tool into X4, again this has the big advantage of actually being capable of operating as a proper PDF generator.

The only advantage "true" sign software really offers is the fact that basic vinyl cutting and printing features are "built in". But let's look at what this really means.... to cut vinyl you pay significantly more money to enjoy the benefit of a poorly made copy of Corel which happens to have a cutter interface built in...you can achieve a better result simply by using Corel with something like CoCut.

On the print side most "true" sign making software uses a cheap, stripped down version of an existing RiP engine... you pay a lot of money for a poorly made Corel clone which happens to include a stripped out RiP. You can achieve better by simply using Corel and the full version of whatever RiP is bundled in with specialist sign software.

Hi Andy,

Please do not think I was trashing CorelDRAW. I used to work for them and have used it since version 2 was beta. Further, I was instrumental in bringing CoCut Pro to the US market. But we both know that steps are needed to make CorelDRAW or AI designs vinyl-ready. Strokes cut as hairlines, for example. Shadow effects need breaking apart and welding, trimming, etc.

These are not flaws. It's just that CorelDRAW and AI are graphics programs that think in terms of four-color printed output. (Desktop laser or inkjet, local quickprint shops, etc.) But for vinyl, true sign programs are much better in creating vector graphics that are vinyl-ready since they assume that's where they're going. Cutting by color, or whatever, way easier too. No weed borders to add. CoCut Pro can automate some of that when using CorelDRAW or AI, but it still ain't Flexi, IMHO -- and I am Corel fan.

Best,

Jim

Our owner is in the process of talking with the company we purchased our Flexi upgrade through, but as it stands now its looking like we may head back to 8.6 at this point. They don't have any info on any updates for us and we can't seem to get things working at near the speed we need. So if you purchased your copy on a credit card I'd say think about taking the stop payment route on them. As best I can tell we are taking this route and giving up on Flexi 10 all together.

I installed the patch that Bobby got from SAi the other day. I was only able to tinker in flexi for a short period after I installed the new patch. So far it seems to be running faster and most of the problems I had before are gone.

Sublimefly, Did you install the new patch?

Brandon, obviously you were able to get the software running again.... any update on how or what you think happened?
