I need to make a sign that for a family reunion. the family first came to the US in 1800's and the first person to become a citizen was in 1850. they want to use that but I am not sure the correct way to use it. I've thought of est. 1850 but that isn't right. what would you do?

I don't get how they could be there that long before becoming citizens. Were they "freed" or something?
