Need Help Red turns to black or dark blue at random

Hey Folks, This is totally random & I'm wondering if anyone has seen this before. This also happened today on another job where I was printing red only.... I'm running a Roland SP 540V.

yikes! that is random!
was expecting to see some sort of ink dropout, but looks like the printhead decides to fire all colors at once at random.

possibly a dirty encoder strip or a piece of lint/cathair on the encoder sensor?

else it could be an issue with one of the ribbon cables starting to fail, getting pinched in such a way that it causes a tiny short in the data being transmitted to the printhead during movement.
someone else had a similar issue here in this thread

Does it do this in any other files? Are these labels step and repeated as multiple copies in Versaworks, or was it done in the design program? If in the design program, look into your created file for something hidden in that area, maybe some kind of mask.

If the black appears randomly I would guess at a mainboard problem. It looks like it is sending the signal to fire the black head instead of the correct one ( or as well as the correct one ). There is no physical reason the printer would do this, and nothing to do with the encoder. The black head is actually printing properly as it is leaving the white text, but not when it is supposed to.
It could be a short or issue with the transistors, but I suspect the main chip is failing and the only option for this is to replace the board

Hey folks, thanks for the replies to my query. My local dealer says it could be old heads or the communications cables from the head to the carriage board. He also recommended using some contact cleaner & compressed air to remove accumulated dust from the main boards at the rear of the machine. I just replaced both heads after I posted my question & have yet to come across the same problem, so maybe that fixed it..... I'll let you know if the problem raises it's ugly head again. Cheers

Your dealer is right that FOLLOWING GOOD STANDARD PRACTICE (blowing out the machine, being sure fans are spinning fast enough, unplugging and CAREFULLY reseating all the connectors) as part of your troubleshooting is a good idea.

I was skeptical that this was an encoder issue. It generates a perfect square. To me encoder distorts things like a Salvador dahli painted it. I suspected the long cable that travels the width of the printer with each stroke. (Also odd that perfect square like you drew it on a drafting table)
