Yes, you can pause (briefly) in the middle of a print without issue. A slight head strike, maybe on the material clamp if it is dirty, can knock out a few nozzles during a print.

You should be just fine for the most part printing to a quality "gold" metallic vinyl. On your printer's media profiles you might want to lower the heater temperature a little bit if you're worried about curling or head strikes but I don't think it would matter since it is on a backer.

If the display is working otherwise, but not registering the pressure roller arm when you lower it I would look for the sensor that senses that pieces location and see if it is dirty or broken.
