  1. Do you paint walls?

Customer walks in, looks around the shop at the signs and banners, asks if I paint walls. I tell him no, I print on vinyl and then apply to walls. If he needs a sign painter I can put him in touch with one. No, he already painted the wall. He starts telling me that he primed his wall with...
  2. Darn Dumpster Divers.....

As bad as the economy has been, I'm not surprised to see and hear about more dumpster diving. As long as they don't leave a mess behind, I don't care. There is quite a "movement" going on with dumpster diving, some people are making a living at it. If you want to have some fun, drive around a...

  8. Cortisone Shots

I opted for some acupuncture instead of cortisone in the knees. It worked pretty well. Since Gino started it, I'll throw in a funny Dad injury story. My father was about 35 years old and was playing softball, he tried a Pete Rose slide into second base and managed to separate the cartilage...
  9. The secret to happiness!

Skyhigh, I too have "Set" hours, 9-5 Mon-Fri, and lunch from 12:15 to 1:15. Most Fridays I'm actually shutting the door by 3:30. Maybe I overdid the whole "Secret to Happiness" a little bit. But this one little thing has made a serious, measurable difference in just one month. I still...
  10. The secret to happiness!

I can't believe it took me this long to figure out. I started this about a month ago. Never promise anything will be done on a Friday. It's so simple. It's too simple. But it works. It took me about 2 weeks to get out of the habit of taking an order, (especially on a Thursday) and...
  11. First "professional" sign you made.

My first professional sign was also the first time I quit a sign shop. 10 banners, 3'x20'. $300.00 each. Customer comes to pick up and pay, owner steps in and changes price to $170.00 each. I wait until customer leaves, then ask owner why. She said giving them a discount would bring in...
  12. customer did not spell check his proof

I once fired a graphic artist that couldn't spell. I got tired of having to correct 90% of what she did. All that time starts to add up. Worst part was she had a degree in fine arts.

  17. How do you help customers will low budgets out?

There is a big difference in telling the customer that a coro sign is 10 bucks, aluminum is 25 bucks, carved HDU is 250 bucks or telling the customer I'll give you the aluminum sign at the coro price. One way is madness. You pick which.
