I've only used the 1/4" thick stuff not the 1/2". Last time I ordered some, one supplier had Alumalite with black center, and another Alumacore with white center. For post and panel signs, I liked the Alumalite better, but it does dent easy. Always tell self installing customers just to barely...

3m makes different qualities just like everyone else. Never had much luck with ij35c lasting very long.....don't know about the 40c, might be wonderful stuff. The 180c would be a good choice, but if it's not laminated you will probably need to use transfer tape.

This is what I've used for almost 20 years...lol Just a couple I-bolts at an angle, a 1" dowel rod, couple fender washers and screws, and plastic end caps. Take out one screw, and slide the dowel out to change. I only use one size of tape, so I only change it when empty.

I've needed to make a stencil or two, but not enough to warrant buying a roll of anything. Ended up using sandblast resist. Cut one normal, and one reverse, stuck back to back. Makes a fairly nice rubber stencil that lasts a while.
