Facing Major Surgery #17...

Since I got out of a six month hospital stay in December of last year, the two fistulas on my belly I was left with have opened up more than ten times. The skin excoriation from intestinal bile (hydrochloric acid) is always making a quarter size crater next to my belly button that burns like all get out. Just last night, after arriving home from a meal at a Mexican restaurant, I stood at the bathroom sink and drained everything I ate and drank from the hole in my belly.

A week from tomorrow, on the 19th, I am being operated on again by a fistula specialist surgeon in Dallas. The surgery will be in Dallas, a twenty five mile trip from here. My wife will be making the trip every day I am in the hospital during the worst of rush hour after her school lets out.

The surgeon has warned me that I may develop another fistula after the surgery to cut two of them out. He said that at that point I would be on IV nutrition for the rest of my life. I've had to give up food entirely already for six months. It's a difficult existence to say the least. I am reluctant to admit it, but I've already decided that if that is the outcome, I am a dead man. I won't go thru the drain bags attached to my belly and have to forgo food the rest of my life. I will simply eat an entire bottle of narcotic pain pills and check out. It's my only choice. Most people on extended IV nutrition develop kidney and liver problems along with the psychological issues of giving up food. I have steeled myself to this possibility and have accepted it. I pray it doesn't come to that, but I am preparing for the worst.

So, y'all be thinking of me yet again on the 19th and if you are so inclined, say a prayer that I won't develop fistulas again. Thanks.

Arlo,

I'm so sorry to hear about your continued problems. I understand the burden of trying to survive when your body has other ideas.

I whole heartily hope that everything works out. We've never met and probably never will, but know that there is a sign guy on the coast of Maine that is pulling for you and your family.

I tip my hat to you for dealing with all the hardship you and your family have been through and continue to endure.

I look forward to reading about your 100% recovery soon.
