electric vehicles are not a viable solution in my opinion. In manitoba, it's freakin COLD in the winter. how long that battery going to last in the winter time? what happens if you're travelling across the country and you need a charge and there is none.. running our of power or ending up in the ditch in the middle of nowhere in the wintertime is going to end up you freezing to death. You can't run your EV when it's dead to keep you warm. And the whole thing about "phasing out gas vehicles by certain date'...If they want every person on earth that drives to own an EV, could you IMAGINE the strain on the power grid? instead of high gas prices, hello to super high electricity bills (if they can even keep up), just to keep up with all the supply and demand, all the new power stations they are going to have to build just to put out the power required for all the EVs nonetheless everyone's home and business that uses power. it's not a feasible plan for "global warming". More like a gimmick to make things look "greener". The waste etc.. that comes from mining the materials to make those batteries.. yes.. that's totally "saving the environment"..
You lose 20-30% Battery range in winter. So Fill up every 300 KM instead of 450.... And thats on the lowest range battery / EV. Not a big deal. Vancouver winters arent as bad as WPG though, so I can't say for certain it wouldn't piss me off if I was living there.... but one reason I don't live there anymore is the winters!
Running out of electricity... BCAA / All tow companies will either tow you to a nearest charger as part of your package, or most EV's can now charge other EV's... So some companies like BCAA have electric charging stations on them, enough to get you to a charger. I dont know what it is like in WPG... but out west almost every block has a charging station, it's become law that every new gas station HAS to have EV chargers in it.
I just googled... WPG has 315 charging stations in wpg. Vancouver has 1,5000 in just vancouver city... With that being said, I've never had to use a charger not in my house. It's mainly for long travel
As for strain on the grid... Canada isn't as populated as USA is. Our energy grid can handle it easily, whens the last time you had a brown out / black out due to too much usage? It happens in USA in big cities all the time... but the good thing about EV's is 90% of people are charging them overnight, so its not a strain at all.
I do agree they're not more environmentally friendly than a gas guzzler though. Will they eventually be? Maybe... But right now all the rare earth shit we mine for them is worst for the environment. And if every car is legislated to be an EV... What do you do in 20-50 years when we start running out of these minerals like we are gas?
I love my EV, but I think people buying it to be "Green" are doing it for the wrong reason.
