  2. Input needed on logo design

Yes, simple is good. Earlier on in my career I was certainly guilty of not understanding that. All the tricks I knew, I felt like I had to have included in every logo. Yes, out of the books, that would be best. While it's not as heavily written on the how-to's, it's more about the why's. But...
  3. Input needed on logo design

True. I was thinking of an analogy with someone who learns the notes to play a piano and can hit the keys, but still can't 'play' a piano. It's impossible to excel at anything unless you're passionate about.
  4. Input needed on logo design

After three books on the subject, I realize it's incredibly self-serving to reply to this (and honestly, I hesitated to even reply), but I do believe you are incorrect. No one taught me how to design logos other than what I studied, and absorbed over many many years. There are very good books...
  5. How bad did I do!! Shop van wrap design.

We never use photos or bitmaps on truck wrap designs. Try doing one without it. If it doesnt work, it means the branding can't support it, in which case you need to solve that problem before making a potentially costly error.
  6. Mural Vector Art

That was a fun project for my office. Clients love it - they kind of get freaked out when they discover its not real brick. From 10 feet away and when you first walk in the office its pretty realistic.
  7. Attention Oldies...

Great post Rick, and so true. Coincidentally, I just had an article published on Entrepreneur about a similar thing. http://www.entrepreneur.com/article/231192
  8. Our Process for Building a Brand

Haha busted. Actually, the mascot was the last sketch we presented. His initial art direction was more art-deco, and then we both decided retro could be better leveraged. The client just got this wrapped today - can't wait to see how it 'really' turned out.
  9. Our Process for Building a Brand

Thanks for the feedback! I'll share more as we get more completed. And thanks Craig - always appreciate your support.
  10. Our Process for Building a Brand

We're often asked about what it takes to design a new brand for a small business and then begin implementing it. I wrote a quick blog article about a recent brand we created, and how it came to fruition. Our typical brand process is approx. 26-30 hours of design work for the logo component...
  11. New wrap on shop van

The layout is clean and uncluttered but the typography has some challenges with some very awkward negative spaces being created by some of the ligatures. Actually hinders the legibility , especially between the C and O, T and O, and C and H. Just seems like a really awkward mix of u/lc letters...
  12. Online marketing

It's all about content, content, and more content. There's so many moving pieces that need to all work in harmony before you'll see it pay dividends, but once its all going, its a bit easier to maintain. Certainly is a bit more complicated than it used to be, and requires a consistent, dedicated...

  14. New Logo for fairly new sign company

Sometimes it's hard to articulate some of the more comprehensive branding philosophies, and how it applies to small businesses. I was interviewed a few days ago for this publication, and I think they did a great job illustrating some of the concepts we believe in, and how important it is to...
  15. New Logo for fairly new sign company

Neato, No design takes 5 minutes to execute. In my case, if it did take 5 minutes, 5 hours, or 5 days, it's taken 20 years of experience plus those 5 minutes, 5 hours, or 5 days. Why penalize yourself for being good, or efficient. You didn't get that way by accident. I don't think we're...
  16. New Logo for fairly new sign company

And on that note, last year we redesigned a brand and fleet wrap for an HVAC company. They have a dedicated phone number only on their trucks so they can track each lead source, and help measure ROI. They had several years of data as far as how many calls they received per month, compared to...
  17. New Logo for fairly new sign company

It's kind of surprising to hear some people speak about how little value they see in branding for a small business - whether it's their own, or their clients' brands.
  18. New Logo for fairly new sign company

Thanks Pat for being another voice of reason in the discussion. For those who believe good branding doesn't help get you jobs, close more business, and get you more money for your work - please continue onward with that idea while you wonder how your competitors with a better understanding of...
  19. New Logo for fairly new sign company

Everyone does indeed start somewhere, but I'm not sure it makes the most sense here to cut your teeth on your own brand, which really is one of your most important assets. I would recommend some sources right here as there's an abundance of talent that would be able to help you at a fair price...
  20. New Logo for fairly new sign company

I really hope not from you at the price. Seriously, if so, can we schedule an immediate intervention?
